has an effect on the sub as well as the environment that it plays in. IE, the small box of the car acts like another "order", you have a small chamber inside another small chamber. You get a boost that you wouldn't get in a large room, albiet generally centered only around one frequency, hench the "boomy" nature of a lot of cart stereos around a certain frequency. I was trying to design the optimal 6th order enclosure for some 10W3's, but I needed the transfer function for the inside of the Z to do it right since you have so little room for error on a 6th order box as far as frequency response bandwith is concerned. Since I don't have an analyzer or access to any equipment to take direct measurements in the car I was shooting in the dark so never finished it up. I probably will get around to making a 4th order or isobaric 4th order box at some point tho. In case you're interested the interior volume of the Z is 75 ft^3, which is one of the variables needed to calculate the transfer function of the car.
